Squaring Negative Numbers
When squaring negative numbers, be sure to use parentheses for clarity.

When an exponent expression involves a positive number (like 4²), it’s clear that it means 4 × 4 = 16. However, without parentheses, an expression like -4² can be interpreted in different ways:

  1. The negative of 4 squared: -4² = -(4 × 4) = -16
  2. The square of negative 4: (-4)² = (-4 × -4) = 16

Always use parentheses to specify the calculation you intend.

Squaring a Number
The square of a number n is written as n² and equals n × n. If n is an integer, n² is a perfect square.

For example, 3² = 3 × 3 = 9, and 9 is a perfect square.
